Valentino Garavani opened his house on Rome's Via Condotti in 1960, and by then he had already chosen the red. He settled on it in Barcelona in 1959, watching an opera audience, and had it mixed to a formula rather than picked from a chart. Sixty-six years later Rosso Valentino is still specified as a house colour rather than a season colour.
That is the romance. The forensics are more recent and considerably more useful, and they live in a piece of metal about six millimetres across.
How do you read a Rockstud?
Pick up the bag and hold it so light rakes across the studs at a low angle rather than hitting them straight on. You are looking at three things, in this order.
The apex. Each Rockstud is a four-sided pyramid, and the top is a small flat plane with defined edges, not a dome. Four ridges run up the sides and meet that flat cleanly. Counterfeits round the apex, every time, because a rounded cast releases from the mould more easily and needs less hand finishing. Under raking light the difference is unmistakable: a real stud throws a hard highlight along each ridge, a fake throws a soft blur across the top.
The back. Authentic studs are riveted through the leather. Where the interior is reachable, you should find a flat back seated against the lining or the reinforcing panel. Press a stud from the front and try to turn it. It should not move. Glued studs turn, and studs that turn will eventually fall out, which is why so many counterfeit Rockstuds arrive at resale with gaps in the row.
The row. Sight along a line of studs from one end. Spacing should be regular and each stud should sit at the same height and the same rotation as its neighbours. Hand-set studs on a genuine bag are consistent because they were placed to a template. Counterfeit rows drift, and one stud in a run of ten will sit turned a few degrees off its neighbours.

How do you date a Valentino bag?

No single row settles it. A bag passes when the studs, the engraving, the colour, the stitching and the claimed era all agree with each other. A card in the dust bag is not one of those rows.
