Balenciaga’s Mute City arrived for Fall/Winter 2016, the season of Demna Gvasalia’s debut as artistic director. This yellow leather handbag shows the variation’s quieter front, with small corner studs, long leather zip pulls and slender rolled handles carrying the family resemblance. A broad detachable strap and matching mirror accompany its compact body. Graded Very Good, 8.5/10, it brings a less familiar chapter of City design to a Cairo day out.

The Mute City was introduced for Balenciaga’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection, the season of Demna Gvasalia’s first collection as artistic director. It revisited the City through subtraction, reducing the prominent front fittings while keeping the zip pocket and trailing leather pulls. On this yellow version, that change is easy to appreciate: colour and creased leather occupy the space usually claimed by hardware. It is a distinctive seasonal variation for someone drawn to the City’s less familiar forms.
