Miuccia Prada has a doctorate in political science and trained in mime at Milan's Piccolo Teatro before she ever touched her family's leather business. No single row settles it. The bag passes when the leather, the hardware, the plate, the stitching and the interior all agree with each other and with the era claimed. How do you read matelassé and Vitello Lux in the hand?
These two materials carry most of the archive, and they fail in opposite directions.
Matelassé is gathered nappa. The leather is worked so the surface bunches, then held in place by the panel construction rather than by thick padding. Press one pucker firmly and let go. It should give, then come back, and the surface should read the same after as before. A padded imitation behaves like a cushion: it deforms and holds the dent, or it has so little material that it flattens and stays flat. Then follow the puckers to a seam. On a genuine bag the gather runs into the stitch line and disappears under it. On a copy the gather stops a few millimetres short, because the maker quilted a flat panel and then sewed it up.
Vitello Lux fails at scale rather than at touch. The grain is fine and even, and the only way to catch a fake is to widen your view. Photograph or look at one large panel in daylight, from far enough back to see the whole thing at once. Real calfskin grain is irregular everywhere and never repeats. Embossed synthetic repeats, because it came off a roller. Once you see the repeat you cannot unsee it, and no amount of correct branding rescues the bag.

Four things move the number. Corner abrasion, because the gather thins first at the corners and then splits. Handle darkening, which on pale nappa is permanent rather than cleanable.
