Does Every Louis Vuitton Bag Have a Date Code? Chips, Missing Codes and the 2021 Change

Quick answer

No. Since March 2021 a new Louis Vuitton bag carries a hidden NFC microchip instead of a stamped Louis Vuitton date code. Bags made from the early 1980s to early 2021 have a code on a leather tab or the lining, a few older or hard-sided pieces never had one, and a missing code is no more proof of a fake than a present code is proof of a real bag. Sold Attire reads the chip, the stamp and the construction together before any piece is listed in Cairo.

"The bag with no code is usually the newest one in the room. The seller who produces a code for it has told you everything."

Most WhatsApp conversations about a pre-owned Louis Vuitton in Cairo start with the same photograph: a small leather tab with two letters and four digits. When that photograph cannot be produced, buyers panic, and sellers sometimes manufacture one. Both reactions come from the same misunderstanding about what the code was for and when it stopped.

This guide answers one question: does every Louis Vuitton bag have a date code? It covers the 2021 change, the older pieces that never carried a code, how to detect the microchip with a phone, where the code sits on the models we handle most, and what a missing code should change about the way you buy. For reading the code itself, era by era, see our Louis Vuitton authenticity checklist.

Does every Louis Vuitton bag have a date code?

No. A stamped code exists on bags, small leather goods and most accessories made from the early 1980s until early 2021. Louis Vuitton has included date codes since the early 1980s, up until March 2021, and from that point the house moved to an embedded chip that nothing on the surface reveals. Before the 1980s there was no code at all, and some structured pieces such as trunks and hard-sided luggage followed a different marking system. So three kinds of genuine Louis Vuitton exist side by side on the Cairo market today: coded pieces from four decades, chipped pieces from 2021 onward, and uncoded pre-1980s pieces. The question to ask is never "is there a code" but "should there be one for this bag, this year, this model".

The code was never a serial number. Two identical Speedy 30s made in the same factory in the same week carry the same code. It records where and when, not which. That limits what it can prove, and it is why our authentication reads it as one line of evidence among a dozen.

Production period What a genuine piece carries
Before the early 1980s No date code. Judge on canvas, leather, hardware and construction.
Early 1980s to 1989 Digits only, later digits plus letters.
1990 to 2006 Two letters, four digits: month and year.
2007 to early 2021 Two letters, four digits: week and year.
March 2021 onward Embedded NFC chip. Usually no stamped code. Some categories kept a code during the transition.

What changed in March 2021?

In March 2021, Louis Vuitton retired the physical date code on its main leather goods lines and replaced it with an NFC microchip embedded between the lining and the canvas. The chip is invisible from outside. A phone can detect that it exists, but the record it points to, the boutique, the purchase, the repair history, sits inside the house's own system and is read by Louis Vuitton staff. The change was gradual. Pieces finished during the transition can carry a code only, a code and a chip, or a chip only, which is why a 2021 bag with a stamp is not automatically wrong. A bag presented as made in 2023 or 2024 with a crisp stamped code is a different matter: that combination does not exist on genuine current production.

The transition also removed the "Made in" stamp from some pieces, so a missing country line on a recent bag is not the red flag it would be on a 2010 one.

Which older Louis Vuitton pieces never had a date code?

Pieces made before the early 1980s never carried a code, so a 1970s Speedy or Keepall with nothing stamped inside is behaving correctly. Trunks and structured hard-sided luggage used their own numbering rather than the leather tab system, and some early soft pieces placed a faint embossing near a handle or on the edge of a seam that has worn away after forty years. Separately, a tab can simply be lost: on older bags the small leather rectangle that carried the code was sewn into a seam, and relining, repair or a careless cleaner can remove it. Our rule is that an absent code on a piece older than about 1985 proves nothing either way. The canvas registration, the brass, the stitch count and the Vachetta decide.

The Monogram Lockit Vertical from 2006 is the last year of the month-and-year format. A 2006 Lockit should carry two letters and four digits where the first and third digits read as the month. The Damier Azur Hampstead MM carries its code in the title, CA0068, which under the week-and-year system that began in 2007 reads as week 6 of 2008. Put the two side by side and you see why the format matters more than the presence of a code: the same four digits mean different things one year apart.

How do you check for a Louis Vuitton microchip?

Open any NFC reader app on a recent smartphone, hold the phone flat against the lining and move it slowly across the interior walls and the base. On a chipped bag the reader registers a tag, usually with a short identifier and no readable product data. That is the whole result a buyer can get. The chip does not display a model name, a year or a boutique, and no public Louis Vuitton app verifies a bag from a scan. A detected chip tells you a chip is present. It does not tell you the chip is genuine, since counterfeiters have started embedding tags of their own, and it does not tell you the bag around it is genuine. Treat the scan as a quick era check, then return to the construction.

What the scan does well is settle the era argument. If a seller says 2019 and the phone finds a chip with no stamp, the date is wrong. If a seller says 2024 and there is a stamped code and no chip, the bag is wrong. Either way the conversation changes.

Where is the date code on the Speedy, Neverfull, Alma and Keepall?

On a pre-2021 Speedy 25, 30 or 35 the code sits on one of the two leather tabs under the interior zip pocket, normally the right-hand tab. On the Neverfull it is on a leather tab inside the large interior pocket, near the right side under the zip flap, and the detachable pochette has its own separate code. On the Alma it is on a leather tab inside the flat pocket on the right. On the Keepall it is on one of the two interior tabs, under the zip pocket when the bag has one. Epi and Alcantara-lined pieces often stamp the code directly into the lining or the inside of a handle, which reads faint and is easy to miss. The code is always inside, always near a seam or pocket edge, never on the exterior.

Model Usual date code position, pre-2021
Speedy 25, 30, 35 Leather tab under the interior zip pocket, usually the right one
Neverfull PM, MM, GM Leather tab inside the interior pocket, right side under the zip flap; pochette coded separately
Alma Leather tab inside the flat pocket, right side
Keepall One of the two interior leather tabs, under the zip pocket if present
Pochette Metis Leather tab inside the rear zip pocket, right side
Epi and Alcantara-lined pieces Often stamped straight into the lining or the inside of a handle, faint

The Monogram Neverfull GM in our current stock is the clearest teaching piece: lift the pocket flap, find the tab on the right, then check that the pochette's own code sits in the same era. The Speedy 30 in Toledo blue Epi shows the harder case, where the stamp is coloured into leather rather than pressed into a tab and photographs badly over WhatsApp.

What should a missing date code change for a buyer in Cairo?

It should change the questions, not the verdict. First fix the era the seller claims, then decide whether a code should exist for that era and model. A claimed 2022 Neverfull with no code is behaving normally and needs a chip scan plus a full construction read. A claimed 2015 Speedy with no code needs an explanation: relined, tab removed, or misdescribed. A claimed 1978 piece with no code is correct and the code question ends there. In every case the decision rests on the same evidence it always did: canvas alignment at the seams, stitch count on the handle tabs, the weight and cold of the brass, the heat stamp letterforms and whether the Vachetta has aged the way untreated leather ages. A code or a chip can confirm an era. Only the bag confirms the bag.

Every Louis Vuitton piece in the Sold Attire Louis Vuitton collection has been through that read in hand before listing, with the code or chip era recorded against the model, and is covered by the lifetime authenticity guarantee. If the model you want is not in stock, source a piece and we apply the same standard to what we bring in from Japan. Pieces can be inspected at the New Cairo showroom by private viewing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Louis Vuitton bag without a date code fake?

Not on its own. Bags made from March 2021 carry a hidden NFC chip and usually no stamped code. Pieces from before the early 1980s never had one, and on older bags the leather tab can be lost in relining or repair. Match the claimed year to the expected marking, then judge the construction.

When did Louis Vuitton stop using date codes?

March 2021, on the main leather goods lines. The change was gradual, so some pieces made that year carry both a code and a chip, and a few categories kept a stamped code for longer. A bag presented as 2023 or later with a stamped code does not match genuine production.

Can I scan a Louis Vuitton chip with my phone?

A phone with an NFC reader app will detect that a chip is present. It will not show the model, year, boutique or purchase record, because that data sits in Louis Vuitton's own system. There is no public app that authenticates a bag from a scan.

Do Louis Vuitton wallets and pochettes have date codes?

Yes, for pieces made from the 1980s to early 2021. Small leather goods usually stamp the code directly into the lining or on a small tab inside a pocket, and it can be faint. The pochette that comes with a Neverfull carries its own code, separate from the bag.

Does a correct date code prove a Louis Vuitton bag is real?

No. Counterfeiters stamp plausible codes, and the same code appears on every genuine piece from the same factory and week, so it was never a unique identifier. It confirms an era and a factory claim. Hardware, stitching, canvas alignment, heat stamp and leather decide authenticity.

Can Sold Attire check a Louis Vuitton bag I already own in Cairo?

Yes. Send clear photographs of the interior tab or lining, the heat stamp, the hardware and the corners over WhatsApp for a first read, or book a private viewing at the New Cairo showroom for an in-hand assessment.
