How Do You Read a Dior Date Code? Factory Letters, Month and Year

Quick answer

A modern Dior date code reads as two digits, two letters and four digits, and the last four digits give the month and year when you read them crosswise. The first and third of those digits are the month, the second and fourth are the year, so 0129 means February 2019. The letters name the factory, and the leading pair is a control number, not a date. Sold Attire reads the code against the tag, the stitching and the hardware on every Dior piece listed in Cairo.

"Four digits, read crosswise. The counterfeiter reads them left to right, and that is how you catch him."

Dior codes confuse buyers more than Louis Vuitton or Chanel codes do, because the digits are interleaved. A code that looks like it says month 01 and year 29 says February 2019. Sellers in Cairo often quote the wrong year from a correct code, and buyers reject genuine bags for a "future date" that is only a misreading.

This guide shows how to read a Dior date code digit by digit, what the letters mean, why the leading pair is not a month, which pieces have no code at all, and what a code can and cannot prove. For the full construction read, the tag, the heat stamp, the hardware and the Cannage, see our Dior authentication guide.

How do you read a Dior date code?

Take the last four digits and read them crosswise. The first and third digits together are the month. The second and fourth digits together are the year. So in 01-BO-0129, the final block 0129 splits into 0 and 2 for the month, which is 02, February, and 1 and 9 for the year, which is 19, so 2019. Dior codes from the 1990s use two letters and four digits with no leading pair, and read the same way: RU 0928 splits into 0 and 2 for February, 9 and 8 for 1998. A code whose crosswise month comes out above 12 is wrong, and a code whose year lands after the model was introduced is wrong. Those two checks catch most stamped fakes before you look at anything else.

Code Last four digits Month (1st and 3rd) Year (2nd and 4th) Reads as
01-BO-0129 0129 02 19 February 2019
16-BO-0133 0133 03 13 March 2013
MA 0694 0694 06 94 June 1994
RU 0928 0928 02 98 February 1998

The white patent Cannage hobo from 2007 in our stock is a clean example of a mid-2000s code: the crosswise year should resolve to 07 and the month to a value between 01 and 12, or the piece does not match its own description.

What do the letters in a Dior date code mean?

The two letters name the factory and country of manufacture. MA and BO are Italian ateliers, and MC is Spanish; other pairs exist and new ones appear as production moves. The letters do not encode a date and they do not encode a model. What they do is set an expectation: a code whose letters say Italy should sit on a tag that reads "Made in Italy", and a Lady Dior whose tag says Italy with letters that have only ever appeared on Spanish small leather goods is a mismatch worth stopping on. Older pieces from the 1990s put the letters first, with no leading digits, which is itself an era check: a 1998 bag with a three-block modern code was made far later than claimed. We treat the letters as a consistency test between the code, the tag and the claimed year, never as proof on their own.

Why are the first two digits not the month?

The leading pair on a modern code is a control or batch number, and it regularly runs above 12, so it cannot be a month. Codes like 16-BO-0133 and 21-MA-0163 are normal. The most common misreading we see in Cairo is a buyer who treats 16 as a month, concludes the code is impossible, and walks away from a genuine bag. The reverse error is worse: a seller who reads 01-BO-0129 as January 2029, or a counterfeiter who stamps a code with a plausible leading pair and a crosswise month of 15, because he read the format left to right. Ignore the leading pair for dating. Use it only as a tidiness check: it should be crisply stamped in the same depth and typeface as the rest of the code, on the same line, with the same spacing.

Where is the date code on a Dior bag?

On most modern bags the code is heat-stamped on the reverse of the interior leather tag, the tag whose front reads "Christian Dior PARIS" with "Made in Italy" below it. Turn the tag over and the code sits alone on the back, often faint on dark leather and easier to read at an angle under daylight. On older pieces the code can be stamped directly into the lining or onto a small leather tab at a seam, and on some small leather goods it is inside a card slot. The code is never on the exterior, never on the authenticity card, and never on the dust bag. If a seller sends the card as proof of the code, ask for the tag.

The medium Lady Dior in lambskin and the ivory Cannage Lady Dior in our collection both carry the code on the tag reverse, and we photograph it for every listing.

Which Dior bags have no date code?

Dior pieces from before about 1990 carry no code, so an uncoded 1980s Dior is behaving correctly and must be judged on construction. Through the 1990s codes were applied inconsistently, so an early 1990s Dior piece can be genuine with a faint code, a code on the lining rather than a tag, or none at all. Some very small accessories and some scarves are also uncoded. On modern bags, a missing code usually means the tag has been removed in relining or repair, which is a reason to ask more questions rather than a verdict on its own. A code can also wear away on a tag that has been handled for twenty years.

In every case the rule is the same one we apply to Louis Vuitton: decide first what marking the claimed era should carry, then ask whether the bag matches. The Gaucho in beige calf is a 2006 piece and should carry a modern-format code; a Gaucho with no code is a Gaucho with a story to explain.

Can a Dior date code prove a bag is authentic?

No. A Dior date code is not a serial number, so it cannot be looked up, and the same code appears on every piece from the same batch, so it identifies a factory and a month, not a bag. Counterfeiters copy real codes from real listings. What the code can do is disqualify: a crosswise month above 12, a year before the model existed, letters that contradict the country on the tag, a code on a card instead of a tag, or a code stamped shallow in a different typeface from the tag front. Pass all of those and you have earned the right to look at the bag itself, the Cannage alignment, the charm letters, the zipper pull, the stitch count and the leather. For the Lady Dior specifically, our Lady Dior Cannage checklist walks through that read.

Every piece in the Sold Attire Dior collection has had its code read against its tag and construction in hand before listing, and is covered by the lifetime authenticity guarantee. If the piece you want is not in stock, source a piece from Japan through us, or book a private viewing at the New Cairo showroom to see a code read in person.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a Dior serial number?

Dior bags carry a date code, not a serial number, so there is no database to check it against. Read the last four digits crosswise for month and year, match the letters to the country on the tag, and confirm the year fits the model. Then judge the construction.

What does a Dior date code look like?

Modern codes are two digits, two letters and four digits, such as 01-BO-0129. Codes from the 1990s are two letters and four digits, such as MA 0694. Both are heat-stamped on the reverse of the interior leather tag.

Is a Dior bag without a date code fake?

Not on its own. Pieces from before about 1990 had no code, 1990s codes were applied inconsistently, and a modern tag can be lost in relining or repair. A missing code on a bag claimed as recent needs an explanation and a full construction read.

Is the Dior authenticity card the same as the date code?

No. The card carries a style number and a boutique stamp. The date code is on the bag, on the reverse of the interior tag. Cards are reproduced easily and change hands between bags, so a card never substitutes for the code on the leather.

Where is the date code on a Dior Saddle bag?

On a modern Saddle it is on the reverse of the interior leather tag, in the same place as a Lady Dior. On the original 2000s Saddle the code is often stamped into the lining or a small tab near a seam, and can be faint on the patterned fabric linings.
