Swift calf folded into a single H tab, in the orange Hermès chose for itself and has not let go of since 1942.

This Hermès Jige 29 Envelope Clutch in orange Swift calfskin with no hardware and the signature H-tab fold, from the 2010 production year, has been authenticated by Sold Attire's 10-step verification process and listed with full disclosure of inclusions. The Jige was introduced in the 1970s from a client brief for an envelope to carry papers, and it has remained in the Hermès catalogue unchanged because the first version was complete. The orange was adopted by accident during the Second World War, when Hermès could source only one colour of packaging card, and it became the house signature by the time supply returned. Pre-owned Hermès Jige clutches in Swift surface only a handful of times each year on the secondary market. For those who buy once and buy right, this clutch is that piece.

The Vision

Dalia is leaving a Friday dinner at the Four Seasons Nile Plaza. She is wearing a black silk column dress and flat leather mules because the night is long. The Jige is tucked under her arm like a book, holding her phone, a lipstick, and a single card. The orange is the brightest thing in the room, and she brought it because she knew it would be.

The Provenance

Swift leather was introduced by Hermès in the early 2000s under the creative direction of Jean-Louis Dumas, replacing Gulliver as the house's responsive fine-grained calfskin. It was named after a breed of running horse, in keeping with Hermès' nineteenth-century origin as a harness workshop on the Grands Boulevards. Swift's particular quality is its receptivity to pigment, which is why it holds orange with a depth no other Hermès leather matches. Sold Attire sources Hermès Jige clutches through Japan's curated luxury auction houses, where Swift versions from the 2010 period sit at a particular intersection of leather quality and scarcity. The clutch was never produced in large volumes relative to demand.

The Dialogue

What is the difference between Hermès Swift and Epsom leather for the Jige?

Epsom is a heat-embossed calf with a crosshatch grain that holds shape rigidly and resists surface scratches. Swift is left smooth, softer to the hand, and develops a patina with use. On the Jige, Epsom reads as a structural envelope that stays pristine; Swift reads as a living leather that settles into your grip. Swift also absorbs Hermès pigments more deeply, which is why orange Swift versions carry a denser, more saturated colour than their Epsom counterparts.

How do you date a Hermès Jige without visible hardware stamps?

The Jige carries its blind stamp inside the flap, typically on the right-hand seam. The letter code indicates the production year, and the interior embossing quality and stitching density are checked against the production standards of that year. On this piece, the 2010 production aligns with the house's consistent Swift-era quality. Sold Attire's authentication process verifies all three markers before a piece is listed.

Is the Jige 29 practical for daily use, or is it primarily an evening piece?

The Jige 29 is one of the more versatile clutches in Hermès' range. At 29 cm wide and 2.5 cm deep, it holds a phone, a slim wallet, keys, and a small cosmetic case comfortably. The hardware-free construction means there is nothing to catch on fabric or jewellery, which makes it unusually wearable for daytime as well as evening. The orange colourway is read by many buyers as evening-coded, but in Cairo and the Gulf it has a long history as a daytime piece paired with neutral tailoring.

The Care

Swift leather rewards gentle handling. Wipe with a soft dry cloth after use. Apply Hermès leather balm or a neutral Collonil conditioner once or twice a year, never more, and always on a hidden area first. Store flat inside the dust bag, away from denim and other dye-transferring fabrics, which can leave marks on orange Swift. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can lighten the pigment over time. Water spotting on Swift is reversible with time but not with rubbing, so blot rather than wipe if caught in rain.
